walking in the city
multiple-plate etchings with screenprinted charcoal powder
2011 – present
This series and combination of mediums has evolved through many ideas. The precise, clean lines of etching carry the permanence of repeated observations and memories in a place. And the unpredictable, unrepeatable charcoal powder brings in the momentary, the environmental, the unexpected, and continuous change. Michel de Certeau’s “Walking in the City” and his poetic theories on how we select, manipulate, and organize space inspired these wanders. The act of walking “spatializes” and architectural space becomes fluid — does a city shape you, or do you shape a city?
