walking in the city
multiple-plate etchings with screenprinted charcoal powder
2011 – present
Michel de Certeau’s poetic theories on how we select, traverse, manipulate, and organize space, in his essay “Walking in the City,” inspired these wanders. The meandering linework privileges the haptic or felt experience of looking, and renders only what the eye is drawn to and follows. The precise, clean lines of etching carry a permanence of repeated observations and memories in a place. And the unpredictable, unrepeatable charcoal powder brings in the momentary, the environmental, the unexpected, and continuous change.
The act of walking “spatializes” and architectural space becomes fluid — does a city shape you, or do you shape a city?
