reflecting on light & space

. STATEMENT

A series of photopolymer and lumen prints that reflect on our indirect awareness of objects, space and time.

While seasonal light reflected off of an object is not formally recognizable, the illumination is understood by our peripheral awareness and identifies physical objects in space, which add to our subtle and intricate knowledge of our surroundings.  A calendar of reflection quickly emerges — June is signaled by two sharp pinpoints of light, bouncing off the corners of the coffee machine;  while soft undulating spotlights on the ceiling from the cat water bowls mean the planet is tilting towards July.

Two mediums are used to attempt to capture these ephemeral forms.  One approach takes multiple photographs of the reflected light over time.  They are then printed on translucent japanese paper and layered together to record the evolving shapes of the reflected object.  Another uses the lumen print photo technique.  Silver gelatin photo paper is exposed directly to the reflection itself, which exposes the paper chemistry to its light and records its path across a room.

The results are fleeting abstract forms and soft pastels from photo paper chemistry.  They evade representation, and speak to a sense of our surroundings that we create from the barest suggestion of information.  While at the same time denying an accurate depiction or firm record of the event, lending doubt to the accuracy of observation.
